College Baseball Programs Become Casualties in Hard Times

It was about the worst day Rick Heller, Northern Iowa’s baseball coach, could have imagined. He had to tell his team that the university was cutting the program at the end of the year to cover a budget shortfall.

Life has not become any less miserable for Heller since he received the bad news in late February. He played a key role in an unsuccessful effort to save the program and helped his players find new teams for 2010 — while coaching them through 2009.

Oh yeah. He has also had to look for a new job himself after 10 seasons with the Panthers.
