Do you like low-budget horror films? Jeff Leroy does. He likes them so much that the writer/director/cinematographer knocked out thirteen of them between 1999 and 2006. Now we have Leroy making a triumphant comeback (on DVD) with the giant-rodent genius of Rat Scratch Fever. He’s spent the past few years making a series of videos called Poorman’s Bikini Beach, but Leroy bravely decided to give up bathing beauties and return to blood baths. Fortunately, Rat Scratch Fever might be Leroy’s finest film. Never mind that your typical Jeff Leroy joint makes a Syfy Channel production look like a James Cameron blockbuster. Leroy still does a hellacious job of combining live-action rats with his miniature models. The other special effects are just special in their own unique way.
You’ll be surprised by the cast of Rat Scratch Fever, too. There aren’t any big names like Judd Nelson or Coolio, but Leroy brings in a mix of veteran actors and his own stable of scream queens. The cast also includes moonlighting director Jeff Burr, who’s helmed some genuinely great horror sleepers on his own. Marvel at the mayhem below, and rest easy that some people still live to make movies instead of marketing schemes:
