29 Years Ago Doug Flutie Won The Heisman After Throwing The ‘Hail Flutie’ [VIDEO]

29 years ago today, Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie won the Heisman Trophy one week after making one of the most memorable plays in college football history.

After leaving Boston College, Flutie went on to have a successful career in the NFL, USFL and CFL, winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1998, CFL Most Outstanding Player a record 6 times and the MVP in three Grey Cups. Still, Flutie is still mostly known for his final pass in what has become known as the “Hail Flutie Game.”

The game took place between Boston College and the University of Miami. Miami was the defending national champion and was ranked 12th in the nation, just two spots below Boston College. With 6 seconds left in the game and trailing 41-45, Flutie dropped back to make a desperation pass. The resulting play and call by Brent Musburger is considered one of the best in sports history.
