"Seinfeld" Super Bowl Reunion Was Jerry's Free Super Bowl Ad [VIDEO]

The Internet lost its collective mind a few weeks back when someone spotted Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander walking into one of their old haunts together–making a scene that looked straight out of an old Seinfeld episode. Some sources said they were doing a Super Bowl commercial. Others said they were filming a scene for Seinfeld’s new web show. It turns out it was even more of a genius idea: They were both right.
These days, Seinfeld hosts and produces the popular web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. That’s where he toddles around town with a famous comic mind in an appropriate classic car while going for (you guessed it) coffee. Past episodes featured Seinfeld and comedian Patton Oswalt (in a DeLorean DMC-12), The Office creator Ricky Gervais (in a 1967 Austin-Healey 3000), and the great Don Rickles in a classic (1958 Cadillac Eldorado). This time, Costanza was the guest. We don’t mean the actor playing him. We mean the actual George Costanza, both in the shortened version for halftime at the Super Bowl and the longer version of the episode on the show’s official website.

Here’s the truly genius part: The show got a free ad during the Super Bowl. According to the New York Times, Seinfeld said that FOX asked him if he would be willing to do a¬†Seinfeld¬†reunion for halftime since the game was being played in New Jersey. So he called up Larry David, the show’s co-creator and star of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, to write a mini-episode for the characters to help advertise the show. Seinfeld said in a released statement that the two of them “wrote the script in one sitting, just like old times.”
As we all know, Super Bowl ads cost millions of dollars to produce and air during the game. Getting one for free is unheard of–but if anyone deserves to pull off that scam, it’s Jerry. All he had to do was have his commercial introduced as a FOX Sports comedy segment. That’s gold, Jerry! Gold!
