David Byrne Covers Biz Markie: Happy Black History Month! [VIDEO]

In terms of pop culture, few guys made a transition from Geeky White Guy to Master of Funk like David Byrne. Yes, the stilted art student first broke through when the Talking Heads took all the soul out of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River.” But then the band became proper rock stars when they incorporated an entire funk outfit into their lineup for 1980’s Remain In Light. So is it so strange that David Byrne recently performed Biz Markie’s hip-hop classic “Just A Friend” at a concert to support the Content Creators Coalition?
Yes, it is–but not so strange that we’re disappointed that David Byrne has to use a lyric sheet in this video. But that’s just us being picky. It’s still a lot of fun. We’re not too sure what the Byrne/Biz connection is all about, but we do remember that Biz’s busy sampling created some important lawsuits in the early days of rap. We’ll go with that.
