LSU's Zach Mettenberger Fooled Around With His Urine for the NFL

Former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger is expected to be a mid-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. However, his draft stock may have fallen some with the report on Monday that he provided a diluted urine sample at February’s scouting combine. A diluted sample is considered to be the same as a failed test under the NFL’s drug testing program. Mettenberger wasn’t alone, though, with more than ten prospects having positive tests.
Athletes, of course, have been trying to get around drug tests since they were created. It can involve drinking a lot of water, or having someone provide the sample for them–but cheating the test is normal. Zach’s formal defense is that he’d been drinking at least a gallon of water a day trying to avoid dehydration. That’s a good reason to be drinking so much water, and a good reason for a sample to be diluted. So let’s file that under “possible,” with more tests to get to the truth.
